This weekend marks the fifth anniversary of Small Business Saturday, a day that shines a spotlight on all the amazing small and independent businesses across the country in this busy Christmas shopping period.

To celebrate, Billie Piper, a passionate supporter of small businesses, decided to step off the Londonstage and don an apron to help out in her favourite local showp in North London – The Cake House.

While at The Cake House, Piper alongside the café owner, Lorenzo, helped out, baking and icing cakes to encourage everyone to get out there and support Small Business Saturday. Lorenzo has owned the café for over 15 years making it an integral part of the community in which Piper and many others live.

Ive been coming to The Cake House – daily!  since I moved to the area. I live locally and absolutely love the relationships with people in what feels like a village. I want my kids to know people in the community and be able to come into The Cake House and ask for their ridiculous desert requests! I come to The Cake House all the time and Lorenzo has managed to get my daily coffee order down from three shots to two which, in fairness, took quite some doing. – Billie Piper

Small Business Saturday sees thousands of small businesses all over the country take part every year since its inception. According to research undertaken by American Express, founder and principal supporter of Small Business Saturday, last year a total of over £717 million pounds was spent by shoppers on this particular day.

I was delighted when Amex asked me to help support this years Small Business Saturday. They actually read about me talking about local businesses that Im passionate about in my local press and decided to contact me to get involved. Independent retailers across the UK offer so much more to a community than just a shop  and that is something I really care about. – Billie Piper

Support #drawaline

The level of violence against women across the world is staggering. From rape used as a weapon of war, to young girls in refugee camps who are forced to have sex to survive, or women in London who are sexually harassed at work.

These are lines that should not be crossed, and now more than ever we need to take a stand. Every donation will bring us one step closer to eliminating violence. Will you help us #drawaline?

Federico García Lorca’s 1934 devastating drama is radically reimagined by Australian director and dramatist Simon Stone, who transforms the achingly powerful tale of a provincial Spanish woman’s desperate desire to have a child into a parable of modern life. Having won 2017 Olivier Awards for Best Revival and Best Actress for Billie Piper when staged at the Young Vic in London, this full-blooded production is transported to the Armory for its highly anticipated North American premiere.

Making her New York stage debut, the extraordinary Piper delivers a fearless performance as the woman—now a blogger and journalist—driven to the unthinkable by her obsession with her own infertility while brutally documenting her trauma amidst the internet-surfing blogosphere of today. Stone—in his New York directorial debut—superbly stages this requiem for lost hope in a glass tank that transforms from luxurious apartment to garden to wild music festival at an electrifying pace. Intersecting the audience, this highly unusual staging serves as a strikingly effective visual metaphor to imitate life under a microscope and lived online while heightening our sense of voyeurism.

Yerma runs from 23rd March – 21st April 2018.
